Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay learned that art is a great vehicle to engage in social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
